Dear Leary Families,
Thank you for a wonderful school year! Best of luck to all our third-grade students as they transition to Vollmer. We know you will do great things in the years ahead, and we look forward to hearing about your future successes and accomplishments.
As I close this chapter, I want to thank our Leary families for the privilege of serving as Principal of Leary Elementary for the past six years. It has been a true joy and honor to work alongside our incredible Leary Lions, dedicated staff, and supportive families. Together, we have celebrated many accomplishments, created lasting memories, and built a strong school community.
Thank you for your partnership, trust, and support throughout my time at Leary. While I will always cherish my time as a Leary Lion, I am excited for the future of our school under the leadership of Ms. Magee. She is a talented and caring leader, and I know Leary is in excellent hands.
With sincere gratitude and appreciation,
Mrs. K. Dina Stathopoulos

Dear Leary Families,
We had a busy and exciting week at Leary Elementary! Our students enjoyed many engaging learning opportunities, end-of-year activities, and special events that helped make the week memorable.
One of the highlights was our Playground Party, which was moved indoors due to the weather. Despite the change in plans, it was wonderful to see students and families gathering together to enjoy food, conversation, and time with friends. Thank you to our families for their flexibility and understanding as we adjusted the event to ensure everyone's safety.

A special thank you also goes to the Leary Parent Group for sponsoring the event and for their flexibility in helping us make the transition indoors. Thank you to Leary staff who volunteered at the event and to our custodians.
Happy Father’s Day to all the amazing Leary dads and father figures! Thank you for the love, support, and guidance you give every day.

Kindergarten Performance
What a wonderful Kindergarten performance last Thursday! Our students truly shined as they showcased their personalities, talents, and all the growth they have made since the start of the school year. It was a joy to see their confidence on display and to celebrate how far they have come in such a short time.

Leary Field Day
We will celebrate the end of the school year with a spectacular FIELD DAY Tuesday, June 23!!! Your child’s teacher will let you know the specific time each grade level is scheduled to participate in field day activities. During this time, students will travel together with their class to fun activity stations outdoors. Please make sure your child has sneakers and is dressed appropriately for activity. Also, don’t forget to apply sunscreen before you come to school.

Parents are invited to come and join in the fun! Please feel free to join us during your child’s assigned field day time. For safety and logistical reasons, parents will not be allowed to enter the building. Upon arriving, please walk around to the back of our building and you will see the festivities! Unfortunately, we do not have the space to accommodate siblings. We are looking forward to a wonderful, fun-filled day!
Leary 2025-2026 Yearbooks
As a special recognition, yearbooks were distributed first to third-grade students who ordered one on Thursday, June 18. Students in grades K–2 who ordered a yearbook will receive theirs on Monday, June 22.
Congratulations to one of our third-grade students, Caroline Ziccarelli, winner of this year's Yearbook Cover Design Contest sponsored by our Parent Group! Thank you for creating such a wonderful cover for our 2025–2026 yearbook.

Dear Leary Families,
June is here and our Leary Lions are busy learning, attending field trips, and participating in end-of-year activities with their teacher and classmates. It’s an exciting time at Leary.
Last week, our kindergarten students visited Springdale Farm as part of their Science and CKLA learning. This hands-on experience allowed students to make real-world connections to the concepts they had been exploring in the classroom while learning about plants, animals, and life on a farm.

Flag Day Assembly
On Friday, June 12, we will be celebrating Flag Day at Leary Elementary. Students are encouraged to show their patriotic spirit by wearing red, white, and blue.

Dear Leary Families,
It’s hard to believe we are already halfway through May, and summer is right around the corner! This week, May 18–21, is a Student Council-sponsored Spirit Week. As we enjoy the warmer weather and exciting activities, please continue to remind our Leary Lions that our SEL/PBIS expectations of being kind, caring, respectful, and responsible remain important everywhere — in the classroom, hallways, playground, and on the bus.
Below is a flyer outlining what to wear each day for Spirit Week.

Building Safety Update-We have completed all of the required safety drills for this school year.
STEM Night 2026 was a Great Success!
A huge thank you to Ms. Tran and Mrs. Williams for organizing this year’s event; it was engaging, innovative, and ran seamlessly. Our Leary Lions and their families enjoyed every station and performance, leaving with smiles on their faces. We are also grateful to the many staff members, district volunteers, and Senior High School students who contributed to the event’s success by volunteering and sharing their passion about STEM.

Last week, second grade students visited Tinker Nature Park/Hansen Nature Center, where they learned about the center and its role in the community. Earlier this year, students raised $132.55 through a bottle and can fundraiser connected to a CKLA service-learning project and donated the proceeds to the park to support environmental education. We are proud of our students for showing kindness, responsibility, and community involvement.

Budget Vote and Board of Education Election Tuesday, May 19
Rush-Henrietta’s annual budget vote is scheduled for 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. this Tuesday, May 19. The vote is at the district’s Transportation and Operations Center, 1133 Lehigh Station Road. Please make a plan now to vote on Tuesday. Make your voice heard!
Budget Highlights
The proposed budget-to-budget change from this year to next is 4.39 percent. The proposal will:
- preserve and strengthen instructional programs for 5,700+ R-H students.
- ensure ongoing mental wellness initiatives to support those R-H students.
- strengthen employees’ total compensation to make R-H more competitive. This includes teachers, bus drivers and monitors, paraprofessionals, clerical staff, and facilities employees.
- align spending with district priorities and Vision 2037 strategic plan.
Taking into account the School Tax Relief (STAR) benefit, a district resident owning a house assessed at $300,000 would see school tax rise by $82 next year.
Board of Education Candidates
Three community members are running for two open seats on the Board of Education. They are Dre Collins, Shiloh Arthmann, and Laura Borate. The trio recently answered questions during Meet the Candidates Night, which you can view by clicking the link. In Rush-Henrietta, board members are volunteers who serve unpaid three-year terms.
Absentee and Early Ballots
Qualified voters who would like an application for an absentee ballot or early voting ballot may contact District Clerk Cheryl Castronovo at 359-5010 or ccastronovo@rhnet.org for more information. Happy Mother's Day to all the incredible mothers in our Leary school community! Wishing you a day filled with love, joy, and special moments with those you hold dear. Thank you for the countless ways you support, nurture, and inspire your children every day.

Last week was Staff Appreciation Week, and on behalf of the entire Leary staff, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Leary Parent Group for making us feel so valued. We truly felt the love all week long! A special thank you to Jill Franke for organizing such a thoughtful week of celebration, and to the many parents who donated and volunteered—your support means so much to us.

Leary proudly participated in the First in Math contest again this year for students in grades 1–3. We are excited to recognize the top three students from each grade level for their outstanding effort and achievement.

The Henrietta Fire District sponsors an Adopt-a-Hydrant contest to promote community safety. Children and their families are encouraged to keep fire hydrants accessible for the fire department by clearing away weeds and debris, and by keeping them free of snow during the winter months. Congratulations to William Kingsley, who won the contest for Leary! As a special reward, William enjoyed a memorable ride to school on Friday, May 1. Mrs. Mobilio and William’s classmates were waiting for him when he arrived at school.

Our third-grade students completed their NYS math test last week. They worked hard on the assessment and did their best. We are proud of our Leary Lions. This concludes the third-grade ELA and math assessments for this school year. A special thank you to our third-grade teachers, Ms Tran, Mrs. Tabor, and Ms. Magee, and all the proctors for supporting our kiddos during this testing period. Third-grade families, thank you for your support.
Leary STEM Night is May 13, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Leary.
- Leary families, please be sure to scan the QR code on the flyer or click here to register for the event. Registering in advance will help us plan more effectively.

Dear Leary Families,
This is Staff Appreciation Week! Please join us in thanking our incredible teachers and staff for all they do each and every day for our Leary Lions.
Staff Appreciation Week is May 4–8.

Thanks to the support of our amazing Leary Parent Group, a week of special treats and surprises has been planned to show our gratitude. We extend a special thank you to Mrs. Jill Franke for organizing this year’s Staff Appreciation Week and parent volunteers for helping make it extra special. Let’s all take a moment this week to share a kind word or gesture of appreciation—it goes a long way!
Students are invited (but not required) to fill out a thank-you letter. Letters can be sent in folders or emailed to teachers anytime during the week. Dear Leary Families,
It was a busy week at Leary. Our third-grade students completed the NYSED Grade 3 ELA assessment this week. We are proud of our students for doing their best. Thank you to all the families for making sure the kids were in school on time and well rested.
A special thank you to all of the third-grade teachers who work hard to make sure our students are prepared and that they feel confident during testing. Next up is the NYSED Grade 3 math assessment on May 6 and May 7.
The Leary 2026 Read-A-Thon was a success! Our Leary Lions read for an incredible total of 137, 845 minutes. Congratulations to students in the classes led by Ms. Blair, Mrs. Brannan, Mrs. Gray, and Mr. Selvaggio for leading their respective grade levels with total minutes read. Chloe K., from Mr. Selvaggio’s class, was our overall student winner. Kudos to Chloe and all of our readers!

Dear Leary Families and Staff,
This morning, a student brought a toy gun on the bus. No threats were made to any students or staff and the toy was confiscated when the bus arrived at school. Although it was not a real weapon, we take these situations very seriously. We are working with the child and family to address this as outlined in our Code of Conduct.
Thank you for your support.

Dear Leary Families,
I am excited to share that beginning tomorrow, students will once again be able to visit the library to borrow books! Students will visit the library during their SEL and Tech classes. The area is clean, the new bookshelves are in place, and they are filled with wonderful books. While the remainder of the library renovation will continue in the future, we are thrilled that our Leary Lions can return to the library to check out books again.
March is Leary’s Read-A-Thon Month. Last Friday, we partnered with the R-H Sports Booster Club and invited student athletes from SHS to be guest readers at Leary. Below are a few pictures of the SHS students reading to our Leary Lions.

We would like to thank all of our SHS student athletes, Mrs. Kristen Mancari-Koppers (Sports Boosters), and Mrs. Reed, Mrs. Sano, Ms. Tighe, and Mrs. Tabor for organizing such a successful event, one that our students truly look forward to each year.
Last week, all Leary third-grade students went on field trips to the Rochester Museum and Science Center. Below are a few pictures of our Leary Lions engaging in fun learning activities at the museum.

Our theme this year is “Reach for the Stars…Through Reading!” Children are encouraged to make reading a priority every day, and we’re asking families to be cheerleaders and mentors at home, encouraging reading and joining in this school-wide effort.
Below is a picture from Friday’s assembly. See if you can spot the spaceperson in the picture!

Read-a-Thon (3/9-3/13) Updates:
We had a great kickoff assembly on Friday! Kids brought home Read-a-Thon packets. Please write down reading minutes on your paper calendar. The optional Writing/Poster Contest starts on Monday, March 9.

- Read a T-shirt Day - every Wednesday.
- We have a Guest Reader Day on Friday where student athletes from the high school will be coming in to read to all classes!

Dear Leary Families,
It has been a busy and exciting week for our students. Our K–1 students enjoyed attending a Theater Works performance at Burger Junior High School, which was a wonderful opportunity to experience live theater and engage in a special enrichment activity. Our second and third grade students will have their turn to attend a Theater Works performance at the end of May.

We were also fortunate to have cooperative weather on Wednesday, allowing several classes to spend time playing outdoors. The fresh air and movement were a welcome addition to our week.

Safety Week Scheduled for March 2-6
As part of our continuing efforts to make schools as safe as possible for all students and staff, the Rush-Henrietta Central School District will hold safety drills the week of March 2. These drills are designed to practice and assess emergency response procedures. During this week, the buildings will practice lockout, medical emergency, and lockdown emergency response procedures. Rush-Henrietta works year-round to refine its safety and emergency response practices. These activities help us be as prepared as possible in the event of an actual emergency. Thank you for your patience and support as we complete these important drills.
Message from our PE Teachers
We are excited to share that students participated in a gymnastics unit during their physical education classes over the past few weeks. During this unit, students worked on developing strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, and body control through a variety of age-appropriate gymnastics activities. Please note: If your child is a second grader in Mrs. Cole’s, Mrs. Castle’s, Mrs. Young’s, or Mrs. Sereno’s class, they will still attend the field trip tomorrow as originally planned.
Thank you for your understanding and flexibility. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.

Dear Leary Families,
Due to February recess, I’m sending this week’s E-News on Friday instead of Sunday.
February break is Monday, February 16-20. School will resume Monday, February 23.

We encourage our students to take this time to relax, recharge, and enjoy quality time with family and friends. If you're looking for activities to keep students engaged during the break, consider reading together, exploring creative projects, or taking advantage of local community events.
Below are our January Leary Leaders.

Last week, our third graders had a fantastic experience visiting the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO)! They enjoyed the live orchestral music and gained a deeper appreciation for the arts. It was a wonderful opportunity for them to learn and be inspired. As students grow older and enter high school, they often realize just how meaningful these opportunities were to them.

District Parent Satisfaction Survey
Our annual parent survey is open! This is an opportunity for parents and guardians to let us know what we are doing well, and what we can do differently. All responses are anonymous; participation is voluntary but encouraged. The survey will be open through Sunday, February 15, and is available in a number of languages. Simply choose your preferred language from the dropdown. Visit ww.rhnet.org/survey2026 to participate. Because each child is unique, we ask that families complete one survey for each of their K-12 students attending school in R-H. We appreciate your time and insight!

Progress Report Cards
Report cards will be available for parents to view on the SchoolTool Parent Portal as of Friday, February 13. We do not send or mail quarter 2 report cards home. Be sure your SchoolTool app and browser bookmarks to the correct URL: https://monroeoneric01.
i-Ready (math) and mCLASS (ELA) mid-year assessment reports will be sent home this week with your student. If you have any questions about the reports, please contact your child’s teacher.
Parking Lot Safety Reminder
Please avoid walking through the parking lot with your child during morning arrival. Several families have shared concerns after observing students walking in front of vehicles while cars are actively dropping off students.
This year, Valentine’s Day falls on a Saturday (February 14). Valentine’s Day is a wonderful opportunity for classmates to show care and kindness toward one another. Some teachers may choose to acknowledge the day on Friday, February 13, the day before break, in a variety of ways and will be in touch with families about if and how their class will celebrate. If cards or Valentine’s gifts or prepackaged snacks are shared, students will be asked to bring them home so families can open and enjoy them together.
District Parent Survey
Our annual parent survey is open! This is an opportunity for parents and guardians to let us know what we are doing well, and what we can do differently. All responses are anonymous; participation is voluntary but encouraged. The survey will be open through Sunday, February 15, and is available in a number of languages. Simply choose your preferred language from the dropdown. Click here to participate: www.rhnet.org/survey2026. Because each child is unique, we ask that families complete one survey for each of their K-12 students attending school in R-H. We appreciate your time and insight!
2026-2027 Transportation Request Forms Due April 1
Transportation requests for daycare or split-custody arrangements for the 2026-2027 school year are due by Wednesday, April 1. Requests received after April 1 may be delayed. Forms are available on the district website at www.rhnet.org/busing. You may submit the form to the main office or return it directly to the transportation department. Thank you for completing and submitting these forms by Wednesday, April 1.
Attendance Matters
As we settle into the third quarter of the year, please be sure to have your child attend school all day and be on time in the morning. When students miss school or are late to school, they miss out on important learning, interventions, services, and socialization opportunities.

Dear Leary Families,
The third quarter of school begins tomorrow, February 2, and we’re excited about the progress and learning opportunities ahead for your child. We truly appreciate your continued support in their education. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Your involvement is invaluable, and we greatly value our partnership with parents.

We are excited to announce that Leary will participate in the Global Day of Play on Wednesday, February 4! In addition to recess, each teacher will dedicate a portion of the day to play.
This is a special day dedicated to celebrating the importance of unstructured play, creativity, and collaboration among children worldwide. The Global Day of Play encourages schools, families, and communities to provide students with time and space for free play with no screens, no structured activities, just imagination and fun. Research shows that play is vital for developing problem-solving skills, teamwork, and emotional well-being.
Primary Art Show
We are pleased to announce that the District Primary Art Show is opening soon at the Henrietta Public Library. The show opening is from 4-6 p.m. on Wednesday, February 4. That evening, the district primary art teachers will be at the show to welcome students and their families to view and enjoy the art. Everyone is welcome to come. There are 50 works of art from each of our four primary schools on display. Congratulations to this year’s participants. We hope many of the Leary families can make it to the show to celebrate the wonderful artwork.
You can visit the art show any time during the Henrietta Public Library’s regular hours from February 4- March 2.
Health Lessons Update
In February, all grades will continue to learn about safety in their health lessons. This month, students will focus on learning about bullying and digital safety. Please ask your child about what it means to be an upstander, and how they can stay safe online!
Burger Junior High Presents “The Wizard of Oz”
Dorothy and her friends are off to see the wizard in this journey through Oz, where they discover the importance of friendship, courage, and believing in yourself. Dear Leary Families,
By now, you should have received a call from the district, and Dr. Mullen’s email confirming that, due to the winter storm, schools are closed tomorrow, Monday, January 26. Please stay safe and warm.
Students recently completed their midyear i-Ready and mCLASS assessments. As we reach the midpoint of the school year, this progress monitoring helps us ensure that our students are on track to meet or exceed proficiency in both math and ELA by the end of the year.
Mid-year data is essential to guiding instruction and identifying the supports students may need. Our math specialist, reading teachers, and academic coaches work closely with classroom teachers to meet students where they are and support their continued growth. Family letters will be coming home showing your student’s mid-year progress in math and ELA. If you have questions about your child’s progress, please contact their teacher. Thank you for your continued partnership.
Leary Student Council in Action
Every Thursday is recycling day at Leary. Our Student Council members (third-grade students) have taken on this service project. Here they are in action.

Thank you for helping us keep our records up-to-date so we can best support your child and family.

Dear Leary Families,
I am thrilled to share that we’ve had a smooth and successful start to the new year. The students have transitioned back to school wonderfully, settling into routines and engaging in learning with enthusiasm.
Our Lions are very happy to have outdoor PE classes and recess again. Last week students went outside and had a blast playing in the snow.

Meet Leary’s Winter Safety Patrols
Our third-grade students take on the role of Safety Patrols during the second half of the school year. Here is the first group of the year. Empowering students to serve as safeties enhances school safety from a student’s perspective and provides valuable leadership opportunities to develop responsibility, teamwork, and critical decision-making skills.
Front Row: Alex F., Sereniti L., Maverick W., and Sunsar P.
Back Row: Mava M., Hesia I., Ben A., Mollie F., and Quinn S.

The Glow Crazy event last Friday was a success. I want to thank Mr. and Mrs Franke for organizing the event and for being wonderful DJs. A special thank you to all of the parent volunteers and Mrs. Wolgast for handing out water and snacks. Click here to see pictures from last Friday.
Morning Arrival Safety Reminder
This is a reminder that parents should not park in the bus loop during morning arrival, even when signing a student in. Buses may arrive late, and cars parked in the bus loop create a serious safety concern for students and staff.
If you need to sign your child in:
- Please park in the parking lot
- Walk your child to the main entrance
- Sign your child in at the office
Staff members supervise the parent drop-off loop until 7:45 a.m. After that time, staff must report to their assigned school duties and are no longer available to monitor the loop.
We truly appreciate your partnership in helping ensure that our students are at school every day, on time, and ready to learn. We look forward to bringing many exciting learning experiences, new challenges, and new fun this year. The staff and I are excited about what lies ahead for our wonderful school community in 2026!

Dear Leary Families,
Happy New Year! We hope you had a wonderful break, stayed healthy, and had an opportunity to relax with family and friends. We are delighted for 2026! It’s going to be a fantastic year. We look forward to welcoming our Leary Lions back to school tomorrow, January 5.

We are excited to see how much our students have grown from the start of the school year. During the month of January, we’ll be administering a variety of assessments to determine growth and help customize learning experiences for your child. We will be communicating students’ academic and social progress in early February. Of course, if at any time you have questions, feel free to contact us.
Outdoor Recess & Outdoor PE Classes are Back!
If weather permits, classes may go outside for recess and PE. Please make sure students are dressed appropriately for winter weather (winter coats, hats, gloves/mittens and boots, when necessary).
Morning Arrival Safety Reminder
This is a reminder that parents should not park in the bus loop during morning arrival, even when signing a student in. Buses may arrive late, and cars parked in the bus loop create a serious safety concern for students and staff.
If you need to sign your child in:
- Please park in a designated parking space
- Walk your child to the main entrance
- Sign your child in at the office
Staff members supervise the parent drop-off loop until 7:45 a.m. After that time, staff must report to their assigned school duties and are no longer available to monitor the loop.
Attendance is Important
Thank you for making sure your child gets to school each day (when they are healthy) and on time. Many students receive important learning interventions and services first thing in the morning. It is important to staff who work with your child, and, of course, to your child’s classmates who look forward to learning with their friends in school each day. Consistent and timely attendance is essential for student success.

Health Lesson Update
In January, all grades will continue to learn about safety in their health lessons. This month, students will focus on learning about personal space and spotting red flags. Please click here for more details.

Dear Leary Families,
Happy Holidays, Leary Families!
As the year comes to a close, we want to express our gratitude for your ongoing support and partnership. Wishing our families a special season filled with joy, warmth, and togetherness. Thank you for your continued support and partnership, and here’s to a bright and successful new year ahead!

Thank you to all the families who donated to this year’s Hat and Mitten Tree. Donations were given to Green Angels. Below is a photo of our Student Council members with Mrs. Catena, a Vollmer teacher, who kindly volunteered to deliver the hats and mittens to the charity on our behalf. Organizers from Green Angels tell us our collective good work will provide winter clothing items for more than 300 children!

Dear Leary Families,
Thank you so much for your generous donations of hats and mittens for families in need. Your kindness and support help ensure that children in our community stay warm this winter.
This week at Leary we’re celebrating Leary’s Winter Spirit Week, December 15-19. This special week will be filled with fun themes and activities to spread cheer and foster school spirit.

At last Friday’s school assembly dancers from the Rochester City Ballet performed for our Leary Lions. Our students and staff enjoyed the wonderful performance.

Introducing-Leary’s Paw Print: Fall 2025 Edition
Here’s the first edition of this year’s The Paw Print, Leary’s school newspaper. Click here to read the e-news paper. These young journalists have written some interesting articles. I am amazed at what our students are able to accomplish. A special thank you to our The Paw Print staff - our third-grade students, Ms. Magee, and Mrs. Tabor, the editor!
November Leary Leaders: Kaden, Lenin, Colin, Everly, Kinley, Isabella, Ronan, and Jacob

- Two Leary Leaders are selected each month from each grade level, and across all special areas.
- These students will receive a trophy to be displayed in their classrooms and a certificate they can take home.
- Their picture will be displayed on our TV monitor for the entire month and posted in my E-News message.
- Click here to review the matrix.
Thank you to Leary families and staff for making the Culture Fair a vibrant celebration of our community’s diversity. Your stories, food, and traditions created a welcoming, warm atmosphere that showcased the true spirit of the Leary Lions. The event reminded us of the importance of embracing all forms of diversity as we continue to build an inclusive and supportive community.
A special thanks to our staff for organizing the event, it wouldn’t have been possible without your dedication. Click here for more pictures.

Dear Leary Community,
I’m writing to let you know today’s field trip to the Rochester Memorial Art Gallery has been postponed because of inclement weather. Road conditions throughout the region are creating unsafe conditions and unexpected busing delays. We know this news is disappointing and will do everything we can to reschedule this learning experience for our second-graders. Students will remain in school today. Thank you for your understanding and support.

Dear Leary Families,
We look forward to welcoming our Leary Lions back to learning after the holiday break. Just like that, we are well into the second quarter and parent-teacher conferences have been completed. During these conferences, you had the opportunity to discuss your child’s progress, their unique learning style, and to learn more about the grade-level curriculum. Please remember you may contact your child’s teacher, Ms. Magee, or me at any time throughout the year with questions, concerns, or to share a compliment.

As we settle into the second quarter of the year, please be sure to have your child attend school all day and be on time in the morning. When students miss school or are late to school, they miss out on important learning, interventions, services, and socialization opportunities.

Progress Report Cards
Report cards will be available for parents to view on the SchoolTool Parent Portal as of Friday, November 21. We do not send or mail quarter 1 report cards home. Remember there was an important change this summer to the URL. Be sure you’ve updated your SchoolTool app and browser bookmarks to the new URL: https://monroeoneric01.
Digital Equity Survey/SchoolTool Access
New York requires school districts to gather information regarding home access to the Internet, and what devices students use. This annual Digital Equity Survey is accessible through SchoolTool now.
When you log in to SchoolTool, you will be prompted to respond to several brief questions found in each student's SchoolTool account. This will only take a few minutes and is available through the app or by logging on to the SchoolTool website. We created a document to walk you through the process if you are using the website instead of the app. We have also created a short video to assist you with a few of your selections while taking the survey. If you are using the SchoolTool mobile app on your phone, you may see multiple surveys for each student. The required survey will be in red text. Please update or complete the survey no later than Friday, Dec. 12. If you completed the survey last year, please review your responses to verify the information is still accurate.

Dear Leary Families,
We had a wonderful week! We hope you have had an opportunity to ask your Leary Lions how school is going for them.
Hunting Season
Saturday, November 15, marks the start of the gun hunting season in our area. For the safety of both students and staff, there will be no outdoor recess or outdoor physical education classes at Leary Elementary through Friday, December 19. Given our rural school setting, we have long believed this is an important step in keeping our students safe. Thank you for your understanding.
Dress for the Weather
Although we won’t be going outside for recess until the new year, it’s still important for students to dress appropriately for the weather, especially during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal. Please make sure your child wears a warm coat, hat, and gloves to stay comfortable in the colder temperatures.

Parent-Teacher Conferences
Parent-Teacher conferences are Monday, November 24, and Tuesday, November 25. If you haven’t scheduled a conference yet, it’s not too late to contact your child’s teacher to schedule a meeting.

Digital Equity Survey/SchoolTool Access
Since 2021, the New York State Education Department has required districts to gather information regarding home access to the Internet, and what devices students use. This annual Digital Equity Survey will be accessible through SchoolTool beginning Thursday, November 20.
When you log in to SchoolTool after that date, you will be prompted to respond to some brief questions found in each student's account. You won’t be able to access your student’s information, including report cards, until this is completed. If more than one survey is available for your child, please review the version in red. This will only take a few minutes and can be done via the app or by logging on to the SchoolTool website. We created a document to walk you through the process if you are using the website instead of the app.
If you completed the survey last year, please review your responses to verify the information is still accurate. If you have not already completed the survey, you will be prompted to do so when you log in. Please update or complete the survey no later than Friday, December 12.
Please note: If you are using the SchoolTool mobile app, you may see multiple surveys for each student. The required survey will be in red text.
We have also created a short video to assist you with a few of your selections while taking the survey. We appreciate your time and thank you for helping us to fulfill this state requirement.
Important Information for our School Nurse
We are seeing an increase in student illnesses, including flu-like symptoms. Please keep your child home if they show signs such as fever, cough, fatigue, congestion, headache, vomiting, diarrhea, or sore throat. Per district policy, students must stay home for at least 24 hours after their fever has gone away without using medication.
Family Night at U of R at The Institute of Optics
Here’s a fun educational opportunity sponsored by The U of R. The event is from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, December 13, at the Institute of Optics. Registration is required and parking for the event is free.

Local Resources for Families
With the holiday season approaching and the potential for limited federal resources being made available to assist local families, we want to remind our community of several local avenues of support. Students can always take advantage of the free breakfast and lunch options on school days. (We recommend submitting the annual free and reduced lunch forms so R-H can continue to provide an array of services to students and families.) In addition, families can utilize the R-H Kicking Hunger School Food Pantry and additional local food resources. You also may visit this page on our website for a variety of resources available to families.

Dear Leary Families,
As we observe Veterans Day on Tuesday, to all veterans within our Leary community and beyond, we thank you for your service!

We had a wonderful week at Leary. As Ms. Magee and I visit classrooms, our Leary Lions continue to impress us each day. During math lessons, we see young mathematicians in action, demonstrating their understanding of concepts and using a variety of strategies to solve problems. In ELA, our second graders are exploring Greek mythology and learning to identify whether myths are fiction or nonfiction. Ask your child to share what they’ve been learning. Parent-teacher conferences are from 1 to 8 pm Monday, November 24, and from 8 am to 3 pm Tuesday, November 25. Contact your child’s teacher to schedule a conference.
We are excited to introduce this year’s Leary 3rd Grade Student Council! These student leaders were selected by their classmates to represent their peers and help make our school an even better place to learn and grow.

It’s Almost Report Card Time!
Student report cards will be available in SchoolTool on Friday, November 21. Additional information about how to access report cards online will be shared in an upcoming E-News. If you have not yet set up your SchoolTool Parent Portal account and need assistance, please contact Stephanie Stappenbeck in the Leary main office at 359-5461.

We are beginning routine vision and hearing screens at the first-grade level. You will hear from the health office if there are concerns for your student’s vision or hearing. Health lessons continue in the first grades, please ask your first grader about our Safety Rules!
Message from School Counselor Ms. Proe
Health lessons have continued for each grade level, and are now being taught by Lilli Proe, our school counselor. This month, each grade has been learning about the following health topics: kindergarteners - dental hygiene; first graders - getting proper sleep; second graders- germs and illnesses (with a focus on preventing the spread of germs); and third graders - germs and illnesses (with a focus on communicable vs. non-communicable diseases). Please ask your students about the ways they can stay healthy!

October 24, 2025 (Therapy Dog Notification)
Dear Leary Families,
Leary has been piloting a Therapy Dog Program with great success as part of our ongoing efforts to support students’ social and emotional learning. Partnering with ROC Dogs, an accredited therapy dog agency working with other Monroe County schools, we’ve seen positive outcomes for students and staff alike.
We are now expanding the program to all classrooms. Therapy dogs and their certified handlers provide comfort and support through small group and individual interactions that promote emotional wellness. Rush-Henrietta has established clear guidelines and safeguards to ensure a safe and positive experience for everyone.
If you prefer that your child not participate in the therapy dog program, please complete the opt-out form and return it to your child’s teacher. The forms will come home this week. If you have questions about this program, feel free to email me at Kstathopoulos@rhnet.org or call me at 359-5460.
We look forward to continuing this initiative to support our students’ mental health and well-being.
Sincerely,

K. Dina Stathopoulos

Last week, members of the Rush-Henrietta Fire Department visited Leary kindergarten classes to teach our students about fire safety. Students learned important tips on how to stay safe in case of a fire and what to do in an emergency.

DESSA Screening 2025-2026-Please read
Dear Parent or Guardian:
More than two decades of research helps us understand the important role that social-emotional skills play in shaping each student's success both now and in the future. Making good decisions, demonstrating self-control, persisting at challenging tasks, and working well as a member of a group are examples of skills necessary for children to be successful well into adulthood.
We are committed to prioritizing mental health and supporting our strategic plan goal to increase the social-emotional competence of our students. For the second year, R-H will be using a strength-based universal screening tool called DESSA. It is our goal to have 80 percent of students take part in this benchmarking twice each school year - once in the fall and spring. At the K-6 level, teachers will complete administration of this screener for their entire class. Building teams will review the data and use it to help shape the support we provide to students. You can opt-out your child by emailing me before Friday, October 17.
If you have questions, please contact me. Thank you for your continued support.

Dear Leary Families,
Thank you for your patience. Here's last Sunday’s E-News message.
We had a wonderful week at Leary! Friday we had our second assembly of the school year and our focus was the PBIS/SEL traits of Relationship Skills and Be Caring. We discussed how everyone shows emotions differently. Below are the traits we reviewed at our assembly. We practiced our Leary Pride Song and sang it as a whole school.

The first group of VIP winners were announced during the assembly. During lunch, VIP classes get to sit at special tables on the stage, receive VIP treatment from staff, and play a variety of games. Ask your student if their class was a winner during the VIP drawing on Friday. The special-area teachers announce the first Leary Leaders for the year at the assembly as well.
Last week, the Leary Lions did a wonderful job during Safety Week as we practiced a number of drills.
Monster Bash
Leary’s Monster Bash is coming soon! Please join us at Leary for a fun evening of games, and snacks from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, October 24. Here is the Monster Bash flier with all of the details. Parents must accompany children throughout the event.

Student Recognitions
We are always looking for opportunities to get to know and celebrate students on an individual basis. This gives our students the opportunity to share their interests and uniqueness with classmates. Traditionally, this occurs on a student’s birthday, but it could also happen on a holiday or as part of the classroom culture (ie. student of the week, etc.). Due to allergies, some classrooms may not be able to participate in celebrations that involve food. Instead, we suggest the following:
-family member or special person participates in a read aloud in class or Google Meet
-celebration circle
-students write cards or make a craft
-sing the student a special song
-small gift to pass out to class
*deliveries of items for students are not allowed (balloons, flowers, etc.)
Leary Needs You! We’re excited to share that we are hiring paraprofessionals to join our team at Leary! In addition, Rush-Henrietta is continually looking for substitute teachers to support our schools.
If you know anyone—friends, family members, or neighbors—who may be interested in these opportunities, please encourage them to apply. R-H is a wonderful place to work, and we would love to welcome more caring, dedicated individuals to our community.
Thank you for helping us spread the word!
Regular Attendance Matters
Consistent attendance is key to helping students stay engaged, understand lessons, and achieve their academic goals. When students are present and on time every day, they are better equipped to keep up with classwork, participate in activities, and develop positive routines. We understand that there are times when absences are unavoidable due to illness or emergencies, but we encourage families to prioritize being in school whenever possible. Every day of learning builds upon the previous one, and being present helps ensure that your child stays on track.

Dear Leary Families,
Thank you to everyone who attended Leary’s Open House last week. It was wonderful to see our Leary Lions and their families! A special thank you to all of the families who took the shuttle bus to Open House, keeping our parking lot from overcrowding. We sincerely appreciate all of you supporting your children.
Safety Week Scheduled for September 29 - October 3
As part of our continuing efforts to make schools as safe as possible for all students and staff, the Rush-Henrietta Central School District will hold safety drills during the week of September 29 to October 3. These drills are designed to practice and assess emergency response procedures. During this week, the buildings will practice a variety of drills. We work year-round to refine our safety and emergency response practices. These activities help us be as prepared as possible in the event of an actual emergency. Thank you for your patience and support as we complete these important drills.
Morning Arrival Reminder
For the safety of our students, please do not enter or park in the bus loop when buses are present. Parking in the loop during this time creates a dangerous situation for both children and drivers. If your child arrives late to school, after 7:45 a.m., please park in the parking lot and walk your child to the main office to sign them in. Thank you for helping us keep our students safe.
Library Update
We are still waiting for the delivery of our new library bookshelves and furniture, so the library remains closed at this time. I will update families when I have more information. In the meantime, our Library Media Specialist (LMS), Mrs. DioGuardi, has created a reading activity board for students to access from home, as well as a technology resource page for families.

September 25, 2025 (Open House Reminder)
Dear Leary Families,
Tonight, Thursday, September 25, is Leary’s Open House for students in Grades 1-3 and their families. This is a nice, informal opportunity to see the classroom and school. Due to limited parking, we will stagger the times. Our Grades 1-3 families are invited to come from 6 to 7 p.m.

For your convenience, and to help with parking, shuttle buses will be provided to and from Leary from the Rush Fire Hall at 1971 Rush Mendon Road, Rush NY 14543 to Leary Elementary. We highly recommend this option be used to alleviate some of the traffic in and out of the school as parking is limited!
Kindergarten families, please note the orientation day in August served as your introduction to Leary. In November, we will have parent-teacher conferences for grades K-3. This will be an additional opportunity for parents to meet with their child’s teacher.
Since our PE teachers, art teacher, music teacher, reading teachers, Mental Health Team (MHT), service providers, ENL teachers, LMS, School Nurse, attended the Kindergarten Orientation in August, they will not be in attendance. Therefore their rooms will not be accessible tonight.
Looking forward to seeing everyone tonight!

Dear Leary Families,
The first four days of school at Leary were wonderful! This week is always an exciting time as students settle into new classrooms, meet their teachers, and build friendships with classmates. Our top priority is safety, and we are equally dedicated to making sure every Leary Lion feels comfortable, supported, and eager to learn from day one. We truly value your partnership and look forward to working together to make this a fantastic year for your child. Here’s to a safe school year filled with growth, learning, and joy!
Our first Leary Pride assembly was Friday, September 5. We discussed the term Whole Body Listening and reviewed this month’s SEL/PBIS traits: Self-Awareness, Being Ready to Learn, and we read the book “Stellarphant” by James Foley. This year's school theme is Reach for the Stars.

School Picture Day is Friday, September 26. Click here for the form. Paper copies will be sent home with your child on Friday, September 12. If you need an additional form, please call the main office at 359-5460.

R-H Guides to Student Learning
Rush-Henrietta and Leary Elementary value partnerships with parents and guardians of our students. The work you do at home to prepare students for the learning experiences that take place in the classroom is a key component to their success. To better inform parents of elementary students about what their children are expected to know and be able to do in each grade level, the R-H Office of Instruction has developed informational booklets and brochures. Please feel free to download, read, and print these documents. Click here for more information.
Afterschool Busing Reminder
In the event a parent or parent designee is not visible to the driver during afternoon drop-off, or a child cannot make his or her way inside the house, the student will be transported to our Good Shepherd building, 3288 East Henrietta Road. This service will cost $25 the first time it is used, $40 the second time, and $50 the third time. This payment is due on arrival and may be paid with cash or credit card. The program closes at 5 p.m. each weekday. After three bus returns, you will be asked to secure permanent after-school child care for your child(ren). Cub Care at each of our elementary buildings is an option, for a fee.
Safety Drills
As part of our continuing efforts to make schools as safe as possible for all students and staff, Rush-Henrietta holds safety drills. We had a bus safety drill Thursday, September 4. We will practice a variety of safety drills during the year. These drills are designed for practicing and assessing emergency response procedures. Each school will practice evacuation, medical emergency, and lockdown emergency response procedures. We are required to complete eight evacuation drills before December. If you would like more information about how Rush-Henrietta and Leary are keeping students and staff safe, visit this link on the district website.
Leary’s School Hours: Leary’s school hours this year are 7:35 a.m. to 1:47 p.m. Students can start being dropped off at 7:35 a.m. and are considered late at 7:46 a.m.
Health Office & Main Office: Again this year, in an effort to eliminate paper notes to the main or health offices, we are asking families to submit notes electronically regarding attendance. Instead of sending in a note, please use the following forms:
School Absence Form 25.26
Early Pick-Up/Dismissal Form 25.26

Blue Important Information Cards
Each student received a blue card in their “Leary Take-Home” folder on the first day of school. Check this for accuracy and double-check that we have correct email addresses listed on the blue card. Email is the way we send our school and district information, so it is really important that these are updated and accurate! You will need to send the blue card back with your child to school.

Dear Leary Families,
We had a great first day at Leary! The staff and I are so happy to welcome everyone back and meet our new students. Our Leary Lions did an outstanding job learning classroom routines and getting reacquainted with their school. Our new students got to learn about Leary today, too!
Thank you to our wonderful parent group for purchasing the welcome-back sign that greeted our Leary Lions when they arrived at school.
Mrs. Bennett’s Class

Mrs. Paladino’s Class

Today’s morning arrival went well. Thank you to all Leary families for your patience as some buses arrived a bit late to pick up students. This often happens at the start of a new school year.
School Hours: Leary’s NEW school hours are 7:35 a.m. to 1:47 p.m. Students can start being dropped off at 7:35 a.m. and are considered late at 7:46 a.m. The parent drop off window is 7:35 am to 7:45 am.
If you would like to be on the permanent pick-up list, please complete this form: Leary Permanent Pick-Up Form 25.26
These forms will automatically go to a spreadsheet in the main office. Of course, you can also call the attendance line at 359-5471 to report your child’s absence.

Dear Leary Families,
We are excited to welcome back our returning students and meet our new students on Tuesday, September 2. During the first days of school, we will have “all hands on deck” to ensure students can easily find their classrooms. We look forward to a wonderful school year at Leary! Please take a moment to review our school’s arrival and dismissal procedures outlined below. As a reminder, family members are not permitted to walk students into the building or to their classrooms. Your children are in good hands!
As we begin this new school year, we invite you to embrace the idea of being part of our Leary school family. Your presence, involvement, and enthusiasm play a vital role in creating a supportive community where your child can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
Leary Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)
Our first Leary Pride assembly is Friday, September 5. This year's school theme is Reach for the Stars, inspired by the beautiful and empowering book, “Stellarphant,” by James Foley. The book shares a powerful message with children: No dream is too big, and no challenge should stop you from reaching for the stars. The story encourages perseverance, resilience, and self-belief, showing kids that with determination and courage, they can achieve their goals, even when others doubt them. Have your child wear their Leary shirt on Friday.

INFORMATION TO KICK-OFF THE SCHOOL YEAR - ALL GRADES
Leary’s School Hours: Leary’s school hours this year are 7:35 a.m. to 1:47 p.m. Students can start being dropped off at 7:35 a.m. and are considered late at 7:46 a.m.
Morning Car Drop-Off: Students may be dropped off at Leary from 7:35 to 7:45 a.m. at door #5, closest to the parking lot. Please patiently wait your turn to drive to the door, keeping in mind the backup of traffic can possibly lead back to East Henrietta Road. All students will enter the building and walk to their classroom. We will have lots of staff available to escort your child to their classroom. The parking lot doors will close at 7:45 a.m. After that time, you will need to park, walk to the front door, and sign your child in at the main office.
To make arrival go smoothly, please try to have your school-age child sit in the right-hand side behind the passenger seat. This way the child will be getting out closest to the door.
Afternoon Car Pick-Up: All families who will be picking up their child at the end of the day are asked to come between 1:50 and 1:55 p.m. Students will be dismissed at 1:47 p.m. Once ALL buses leave the circle, drive and park in the bus loop and walk up to door #1 (cafeteria door) to sign your child out. Staff will be waiting in the doorway to check your ID and pair you up with your child. You may also park in the parking lot to pick up your child. You still need to walk over to door #1 (cafeteria door) to sign your child out with a proper ID.
If you would like to be on the permanent pick-up list, please complete this form: Leary Permanent Pick-Up Form 25.26

News from Leary Parent Group
Our parent group is using a new platform called Linktree. Linktree is a website that serves as a one-stop shop for information about upcoming Leary events, volunteer opportunities, helpful links, resources and our parent group’s contact information. Here is the link again: https://linktr.ee/learylions
The first meeting of the school year will be at 5 p.m. Wednesday, September 10, right before our Welcome Back Social at 6 p.m. Join us!

Visitors to Buildings: We welcome and encourage all volunteers. Those who would like information on volunteering may contact our parent group leadership team or check with your child’s classroom teacher. When entering the school, all visitors must use the main entrance, where you will be greeted by staff in the front vestibule and asked to secure a visitor pass. Parents dropping off items, signing students in or out, or picking up children must remain in the vestibule as an added safety measure. All parents and guardians must show ID when picking up their student from school. Guests will not be permitted during the lunch period.
Code of Conduct: Leary and R-H pride themselves on promoting positive behavior and teaching students social-emotional learning competencies. There are times we also have to use our district Code of Conduct to hold students accountable for behaviors. Click here to view our Code of Conduct.
Leary Family Handbook is a useful resource for you to find all you need to know regarding our procedures and pertinent information for the 2025-2026 school year.
